2022 SUMMER TRAINING PLAN

Workout plan and tips from Coach Ian

  • Go for a 5K run, one time per week. This is meant to be a hard day.  Push yourself to lower your time and track your improvement. A 5k is 3.1 miles. Come August 15, Varsity athletes should be able to do this in less than 24 minutes.
  • Hydrate and eat healthy.
  • Spend four days per week going on 15–20-minute jogs.  A soccer game in high school consists of two 40-minute halves. Start to prepare your body to be able to move for a length of time. It is up to you on how hard you push yourself on these jogs. The important thing is to increase your heart rate and breathing rate for extended periods of time.
  • Make sure you always stretch after runs and workouts. Flexibility not only decreases rate of injury, but also helps build muscle and improve recovery time.
  • Lift weights if you have access to them.
  • Work in calisthenics, too.
  • Get to MVHS for summer weight trainings and captains’ practices.
  • Listen to your body and make sure you're resting. There is a difference between being sore and being injured. When you're sore, take it easy until your body gets used to this level of exercise. Being sore doesn’t mean “do nothing” until you aren’t sore.
  • Make sure you're getting 8-10 hours of sleep each night, as it's the best thing for your body and mind, especially between the hours of 10 pm and 8 am.

Nobody is going to do this work for you!  If you are “dedicated to excellence”, you stand a chance of playing to your potential, and that’s all anyone can ask of you. If you have questions, feel free to reach out to Coach Ian over TeamSnap. He'll try to check it every 24 hours.

Varsity fitness expectations

  • Hold a plank and side plank for 2 minutes without taking a break. If you can hold it for 3, even better.
  • Rep 40 push-ups (good form) without taking a break (knees dropping to the floor).
  • Rep 50 one-leg calf raises without taking a break (stopping).
  • Hold a wall-sit for 2 minutes.

You might ask, how do I build up to these expectations?

  • Start with 30-second planks and side planks and build over the next several weeks.
  • Start doing 100 push-ups/day spread out from when you wake up to when you go to sleep.
  • Start with doing reps of 20 and build over the weeks.
  • Start with a 1-minute wall-sit and build.
